Top 10 Tips for a Successful Virtual Interview

Krystelle Budd • September 1, 2020

Searching for a new opportunity can be quite daunting and stressful, add to the mix a global pandemic where the vast majority of interviews are now being conducted virtually and it opens up a whole new series of challenges to navigate.

Congratulations you have secured your interview, so how do you make the most of this opportunity?

I wanted to share my Top 10 Tips for a Successful Virtual Interview.

  1. Dress as you would for a face-to-face interview, first impressions still count. Don’t be late! Make sure you log on a couple of minutes prior to the start of your virtual interview.
  2. Find a quiet private room, with good lighting where you won’t be distracted or interrupted. Be sure to allow yourself sufficient time to complete the interview.
  3. Do a test run, prior to the interview. Ensure that you can access the platform that the interview is being held on and that your sound and video are working.
  4. Ensure that your video camera is at a good angle and check the view. Make sure what can be seen in the background is appropriate and tidy.
  5. Everything is magnified on a virtual interview, so be sure to maintain eye contact and if it is a panel interview be sure to acknowledge and engage each panel member and don’t forget to smile!
  6. Sometimes the communication can be a little disjointed and it is harder to read body signals and cues – wait for the interviewer to finish their question before answering.
  7. Don’t be afraid to ask to have the question repeated if you can’t hear properly.
  8. Do not eat, drink or walk around during your interview.
  9. Be prepared! Do your research on the company, know your resume and have specific examples that demonstrate your relevant/transferable skills.
  10. Have some questions ready to ask the interviewer at the end, i.e. What are the next steps/what they enjoy most about working at the organisation? And be sure to thank them for their time at the end.
Good luck!
