Taking the inside scoop from our Temp Specialists, we have put together this guide on why moving to a temporary role may be for you. You can also check out our tips for applying for a temp role here.
A temporary (temp) employee means joining a team but not being a long-term employee. They often work varied hours as needed and have no commitment to the length of time the employer may need them. There are multiple benefits to you as a temporary employee.
Working a temporary role also allows for a unique opportunity to work on your professional development and gain a new perspective on employment – it's an entirely new way to work.
By jumping into a temp role, you will be meeting people that you otherwise wouldn’t work with. You may be in a role that matches your skills, or you may be in a role that does not utilise your full abilities, but co-workers will still see your dedication, your willingness to jump in and support a team in need, and your work ethic.
We often describe temping as a working interview. The company and your manager get to see the real work you, not just what you are like in an interview. This means you can really shine. Additionally, you also get to really know the company, the team, and your manager.
When interviewing, a company will present its shiniest version of itself to candidates. It may not always be that way and working for a company in a temp capacity means that you really get to experience the ambiance of the company and the business-as-usual work. Making it a great way to make sure your next permanent role is right for you both.
Temping can be highly flexible for you, and a way to keep you busy between permanent roles, however, it can also be a way of life. Over the years we have helped place some professional temporary workers who do not want permanent work. They may enjoy the variety of roles, locations, and companies, have a side line business that they work around, or simply like the ability to pick work up or turn it down as they need.
Build a good relationship with your temp consultant when you register, be clear, honest, and up front on the hours or days you want to work, and you can make your temping work for you and your work-life balance. It is worth bearing in mind though, that you may need to take roles that you may not have considered normally or in locations you might not take for a permanent role, to be top of the temp list! Effective communication with your consultant is the key to being the first candidate offered the role.
