Interviews with Leaders from the For-Purpose sector with Liska Turner.
The relationship between Chair and CEO is key. Organisations flourish when this relationship is effective and strategic. In this edition of The Leadership Series, I sit down with a Chair and CEO to talk about what makes this relationship successful.
This month I had the pleasure of talking to Michele Adair, Chair of Community Housing Industry Association (CHIA) NSW and CEO of Housing Trust, and Mark Degotardi, Chief Executive Officer of CHIA.
The company, based in Wollongong, builds and manages affordable rental housing for people on very low to moderate incomes. They currently have 1,200 properties providing a safe, secure home for over 2,500 people, employ 43 staff and invest millions in the local economy.
Michele Adair was appointed CEO of Housing Trust in 2017. She was elected to the Board of the Community Housing peak body in 2018 and as Chair in 2020. Michele’s previous roles include CEO of Cystic Fibrosis NSW and national executive positions with The Smith Family and Mission Australia.
Before moving to the for-purpose sector Michele had her own consultancy specialising in strategy and organisational performance. Clients included KPMG, Sydney Theatre Company, Case Corporation, state and federal government agencies. She has a master's degrees in Management and in Public Advocacy & Action and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Michele was recognised as the Outstanding Business Leader in the 2021 Business Illawarra awards.
Mark joined as CEO of CHIA NSW in May 2019. Mark brings decades of senior leadership experience in public advocacy and peak body representation to his role as CEO of CHIA NSW. Having worked directly with State and Federal Government Ministers and departments throughout his career, he understands how to demonstrate the sector’s value to government, stakeholders, and the community.
